Sights and Activities Guide to Bali

For many Aussies, Bali was the Southeast Asian destination way before Thailand, a place for surfing and island vacations. Bali has kept that allure, as tourism numbers bounce back and the beach comes beckoning again in Kuta, Tuban and Legian.

The island with its 5,000 square kilometres offers something for everyone. Modern tourist facilities abound, and everywhere you can experience a cultural heritage that is an everyday part of local life. You'll see this in the Balinese festivals, the daily ceremonies, the temples, and their abundant crafts and arts. Music, painting, dance, sculpture and metalworking are finely developed and effortlessly come together in Bali's cultural events.

Balinese batiks are famous for their intricate designs taken from the swirls and eddies of river sand and tidal beaches. You can get carved wooden masks, ceramics and silver jewellery at bargain prices. Good surfing can be found on the western shore, while on the other side, you will find gentle seas and family-friendly beaches.

Bali is an island of flowers. You'll find their fragrance everywhere, growing in gardens, showered on temple statues, offered during prayers and even tucked behind the ears. Jasmine, hibiscus, magnolias, and several kinds of orchids are some of the blossoms you'll see here.

For cultural and spiritual wonders, you can visit Ubud high up in the hills, make offerings at the Mother Temple at Besakih, go to Bali's old capital, Singaraja, or see the floating palace at Ujung.

Sports buffs can get a break at golf courses in Bedugul and white water rafting and kayaking on the Ayung river, or go on walks to discover the secluded sights of green Bali. Nusa Penida has coral beds while Nusa Dua has a popular beachside. The highest point on the island, Mount Agung, called Gunung Agung, is more than three thousand metres and is the holiest mountain of the Balinese.
